Happy Fourth Birthday, Isla Milijana!

On June 4, 2014 at 6:30pm, our sweet baby girl, Isla Milijana Petrovic, was born. Four years later, we have a hilarious, kind-hearted, cautious, imaginative little girl who loves to color, ride her bike, play with Play-doh, escape from “pirates” at the park, read her favorite books over-and-over again, FaceTime her favorite people, go to school, hang out with the friends, play with her little plastic characters, swim in the pool (and ocean – she talks about Florida all of the time!), spend time in Colorado, watch Paw Patrol, and most importantly: be the ‘real’ princess that she is!

Below I’m sharing some details on Isla at this fun age. It totally feels to us  like she is 14, but that’s only until I’m around anyone older than four – ha. I wanted to share some updates on ‘Isla at 4,’ as I love reading back on these as time goes on and you begin to forget the details.

Isla is very emotional – she cares greatly about how others feel. If she thinks she has done something wrong or disappointed anyone, she immediately breaks down in tears (we’re working on this!). She is a great question asker, which shows her interest in others. She will ask my friends, “What is your mom’s name?”, “How old are you?”, “What is your favorite color?” etc. and is great about reciprocating questions asked to her. When Barbara Bush passed away a few months ago, she was very concerned, even though we hadn’t talked about her much before. She asked me how old she was, did she go to heaven, did she have any kids or grandkids, etc. And then she brought her up for weeks on end. When our elderly neighbor passed away as well earlier this year, Isla would tell me, “It’s okay because Ms. Jerry is in heaven now!” When I was putting her to sleep the other night, she said, “How old was Mother Mary when she went to heaven? And what color was her front door? Was it pink?” Ha. Can you tell we’re building a house right now?

Isla is extremely cautious. Especially when drinking from any cup in our house. She asks, “Is that mommy juice?” Which is hilarious but also makes me sound like I drink more than the one glass of prosecco I have once a week! She comes across as very shy when she first meets people, but after five minutes, that is gone, and she’s bugging them with questions and asking them to come see this, that or the other. Sasha always compares Isla to a cat – she comes across as timid, then warms up to you and will be rubbing on your leg for hours on end.

Isla loves sleepovers. She loves spending the night at all her grandparent’s, cousin’s and Auntie Karine’s houses. She really enjoys going to school, but is always so sweet when she sees us at pickup.

Isla is a better big sister than I could have ever, ever dreamed. She wants to play with Emi constantly. As soon as Emi stirs from a nap, Isla bolts across the house to be the first one in the room to greet her. She does everything in her power to always be making her laugh. Isla shares her toys (95% of the time), brings Emi her baby doll whenever she starts to get sleepy, asks for snacks on behalf of Emi (and herself, of course) and requests to be matching Emi almost every single day.

Isla is the girliest girl I’ve ever met. Ask her to put on shorts and a t-shirt and expect a rebellion! Except this morning for yoga camp, fortunately, she was excited to do that! She is growing like a weed (size 11 shoe, size 5 clothing), so I can’t complain about all of the dresses, as it’s easier to keep them in rotation with all of the growth spurts. She currently wants to wear princess costumes everyday, so when Esther of cuteheads made her this ‘everyday’ Sleeping Beauty dress, she FREAKED out because I (happily!) said she can wear it outside of the house.

Isla loves to eat Goldfish, hummus, cream cheese and gluten free crackers, salmon, blueberry yogurt, ham (yuck!), black bean burgers (yay!), all types of cheeses, apples, all berries, crepes, donuts, zucchini, pasta, macaroni and cheese, and cheesy quinoa. For breakfast, she eats the same Special K Berry and Protein Plus mix that she’s eaten for years.

Isla can count to twenty in English, Serbian and Spanish. She can write her name, spell her favorite color “P-I-N-K!,”and cut around the most detailed edges (loves practicing with scissors!). She really, really enjoyed going to school this past year and got into all of the different curriculum. She would come home on the first day and say, “Today we learned about B! That is what bees, bottles, babies, Baron and bubbles start with!” Her memory is better than mine, for sure. We will pull into a strip center we haven’t been to in six months, and she’ll say, “Did we meet Mimicita here to take the pictures with the balloons?” WHAT. I’m always floored by this!

We are so proud of the sweet person that she is today. She truly has a heart of gold, and I hope that she has the best Golden Birthday of all time! Thank you for all of the sweet birthday texts and calls already. xo

Isla’s Royal 4th Birthday Princess Party

Yesterday, we celebrated Isla’s fourth birthday with a small(ish) princess party with eight of her closest friends. There were faux floral arrangements being made, cheese and cucumber sandwiches being eaten, a castle piñata being (lightly) whacked at, but most importantly, Cinderella, leading these nine girls in songs, dances and etiquette lessons. With some sprinkling of princess dust, they took an oath, turned around in a circle, and each became real princesses. Isla believes it all, and I’m sticking with it.

Isla had the best time at the party, and I wish I had just told her it was her actual birthday, because I feel like tomorrow would be a disappointment were it not for yoga camp starting! Lucky me – saved by the bell.

I had lots of help from my friend, Monica, and her daughter, Riley, who made the cake, signage, a silhouette cutout, and a balloon arch. They’re the best! I tried to narrow down the photos that I took, but like always, I failed at being selective. If you want to be nostalgic (like me), you can go and see Isla’s last three birthday parties:

May 2018 Durango Trip

The past ten days have flown by. Faster than ever, but they always seem to when we are here in Durango. It’s truly our happy place. We try to come at least twice a year – this May trip is always very cycling-focused, as Sasha, my dad and his friends do the Iron Horse Bike Classic race. Which is basically just cruel-and-unusual torture for cyclists who want to ride uphill for hours on end. Not my cup of tea, but I’m so proud of Sasha for doing it for the third year in a row.

Kirby and Brett came as well, as they have for the last few years. It was so much fun having them here, but I missed sweet Lillian and Henry! Kirby turned 29 last week, and we spent a bit of time planning her 30th birthday trip to Greece. I can’t wait.

One of the biggest highlights of the trip was watching Isla ride a pedal bike by herself. She has used a Strider bike for a year now, but only started taking it seriously in December. Six months later, she got on a pedal bike and without training wheels, was off! It took a few days to get comfortable with doing it, but she loves it. So proud of her!

We frequented our favorite restaurants (Himalayan, Thai Kitchen, Grassburger, Carvers, Chimayos, Fired Up Pizza, Eolus), drank coffee from Durango Coffee Co., bought vegan baked goods from Smiley Cafe, visited the newly public Lake Nighthorse, fed the fish at the Hatchery, went to the Rec Center, hiked up to Ft. Lewis College, played in the river, went on gorgeous mountain runs, went to multiple parks (Santa Rita being the best!), walked around the train museum, played lots of front porch Jenga, drank wine at Sutcliffe Winery, spent hours in the front yard running around with the girls, pet horses at my parent’s friend’s race in Cortez and cheered on a bunch of cyclists all weekend long. A perfect trip. Back to reality tomorrow!

Here are a few (ahem, 100) of my favorite photos from the past week. Believe it or not, there really are more! Ha.

Mother’s Day Out 2017 to 2018

Today was the last day of Mother’s Day Out for this school year (cue tears, mainly from me!). Ha. The girls’ last week each consisted of a class party, lots of goodbyes, and an early dismissal. I felt very emotional saying goodbye to Isla and Emilia’s teachers, as Sasha and I are so incredibly grateful for them and how much they have loved and taught our girls this year. Isla thinks that Mrs. Tellkamp and Mrs. Etzler hung the moon – she always asks things like, “What will Mrs. Tellkamp think about this dress?” and “Is that Mrs. Etzler’s favorite book?” She incorporates them into our daily conversations, even on days she wasn’t at school. Beyond just her wonderful teachers, Isla made some great friends this year – all of whom she talks about constantly. She loved the girls and the boys, but is adamant that her princess party is “No boys allowed!” Sasha is just hoping that is her mantra for the next 18-or-so years.

Isla ran into her classroom the first day, but Emi’s reaction wasn’t quite so happy. That sweet girl cried the first two weeks at drop of, but has been elated about seeing her teachers and friends since that time. For the first “semester,” it was just Emi and Abby, which was amazing – a 1:1 ratio! And Emi talks about “Abby! Abby! Abby!” all of the time, and more recently, “Anto!” (one of her teachers). Mrs. Anto and Mrs. Juanita were like mothers to the sweet babies in their classroom, and the kids just adore them. I know that so much of what Emi has learned in her short 16 months can be attributed to these two wonderful ladies.

At the end of the year, the teachers prepare a memory book for each of their students. Both Emi and Isla’s books made me cry – it’s such a blessing to know that while I was gone working, they were in such great hands.

On the first day of school, I took photos of the girls in their pretty cuteheads dresses, holding custom signs made by my friend Monica of Paper Flour Ink. Today, I took another matching set. Isla’s growth is less drastic, but gosh, Emi looks way, way bigger! They’ll be so excited to return in the fall (Isla, as a pre-schooler! OMG!!). Until then, gimme all of the camps! We’re having a sweet nanny for a few weeks and have help from Monica’s daughter, Riley, too. Lucky little girls! Photos from today and the first day below!

Last Day of School – May 2018 (Emilia: 16 Months, Isla: 3 Years and 11 Months)

Week(s) in Review

Can we talk about how we are already halfway through May? It’s unbelievable, people!! I can’t handle how fast 2018 is flying by. We leave on Saturday for Colorado and this is going to be a ringer of a week with getting things ready at the house for us to be gone during a very critical point in the home build process. We also get back two days before Isla’s birthday party, so I’m trying to (finally!) get my ducks in a row for that too. I’ve got photos to edit, emails to reply to, and collaborations to photograph. Who needs sleep anyway? Ha.

Yesterday was a wonderful Mother’s Day. We went to church, then spent time at my parent’s house before going home to let Emi nap. Sasha went to the new house in the afternoon to get work done (he’s going to be gone for 2.5 weeks and is freaking out!), then we went to a family dinner with my parent’s and sisters at True Food Kitchen.

On Saturday, we went to Isla’s friend’s birthday party, then celebrated Monica’s 40th birthday party in the best bash ever. Her backyard is the most amazing place ever and the party was so fun. This past week was one of my favorites, because Destiny came into town very last minute and ohmygosh, I HAVE MISSED HER SO MUCH. I am so sad she couldn’t bring the kiddos, because I also miss Truman and Tatum. We had the best time catching up over lunches, dinner (a rarity!), pedicures, and lots of photo taking. I need to get to Utah immediately.

Since I never got around to posting about the week before, I’ll give a short recap – Isla had her first dance recital. It was hilariously adorable and totally like herding cats. I taught two photography classes, which were extra fun. It is getting easier and easier every time I do it! Sweet Isla caught whatever Emi had the week before and was knocked right off her feet for a few days, which wasn’t fun. But oh those snuggles!

I am going to get caught up on emails now! It may be 12:46am, but there’s no time like the present, right? xo
