New Houston Favorite: Adair Kitchen

I was meeting two of my best friends for lunch last weekend, and asked my sister where we should eat near the Galleria, since I don’t know that area very well. She suggested Adair Kitchen, and when I told Patrick and Paola, Pat replied, “Oh, my friend owns that.” Huh? Yup, his fraternity brother, Nick Adair, is a co-owner of this delicious new Houston restaurant, located on San Felipe near Sage Rd. I checked out the lunch menu, saw the words “Black Bean Quinoa Burger” and was sold. Most restaurants’ vegetarian options are boring, but that caught my attention. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. The setup and decor of the restaurant is gorgeous as well – great lighting, minimalistic but welcoming, and the perfect amount of white. The fonts are amazing – American Typewriter and Despeinada for the menus (yes, I’m a typography nerd). We loved it so much that we ate there again on Thursday night for dinner – this time with McKenzie, who was equally pleased. We had the baked brie to start (melt in your mouth tasty), and I tried the Kale and Quinoa salad – yummm. Looks like I’ve got a new go-to restaurant. Go and try it for yourself!

A Very Serbian Weekend

On Saturday, after the Greek Festival, Sasha and I went to his aunt and uncle’s Slava, which is the Serbian Orthodox tradition of the ritual glorification of one’s family’s patron saint. There are a lot of religious traditions associated, like taking a spoonful of zjito (cake pictured below). The Slava cake represents Christ’s body, who was the Bread of Life. The wheat represents the resurrection of Christ.

On Sunday, we headed to Galveston for the Serbian Orthodox Church. Every week, Sasha and I attend Bayou City Fellowship, which is non-denominational. We’ve talked about going to the Serbian church for ages now, but haven’t actually done it until now. It was very different than BCF, but I enjoyed the experience. Sasha even acted as the bread bearer (pictured below). It was a beautiful, yet windy, day along the coast.

Mila (Sasha’s cousin’s daughter) is too, too, too cute.

Opa!

I’ve always wanted to go to the Greek Festival in Houston, and when one of my best friends, Patrick, said he was interested in going to, I was elated. The weather was perfect (apparently 80 degrees – felt hotter), the music was lively, and the wine (oh the Greek wine!) was delicious. So much so, in fact, that Pat and I drank the whole bottle  while sitting on a shaded section of the curb, catching up on life. I cannot wait to go again next year – I’ll probably go at night so I can listen to the live music.

And my favorite (on Instagram) – our empty bottle! Opa!

Friday Feature: Sasha

Starting today, I’m going to feature friends, family, and other bloggers on Fridays. The lucky first candidate is my boyfriend, Sasha (commonly referred to as Sasha Pants, or just Pants). He is an angel and puts up with constant picture taking, and I love him for it. Learn a little more about Pants to the right.
