Week in Review

It’s Tuesday, feels like Thursday… but what’s new? This week is busy busy busy, but I’ll be seeing lots of my favorite faces, so I’m predicting it’ll be a very happy week.

Last week was ever so slightly ridiculous, filled with lots of photos, two funerals for Sasha’s sweet grandma (“Baba”) – one in Houston and one in Arkansas, a playdate to Montgomery with Courtney Brown, and other highlights, including:

  • Having Brittany and Meg over to the house to prep for Jessica’s shower this weekend!
  • Going to Arkansas for the weekend – although we were there for a sad reason, it was nice to be able to celebrate Baba’s life with family
  • Going to Lyndsey’s house for cuteheads ice cream party with some other sweet mamas whom I love!
  • Doing my Global Entry interview at the airport, which I passed (not really an interview), but annoyed because I have to go back to do it again with Isla! I had no clue!
  • Photographing Natalie Weakly and a bridal client of hers at City Center // Molly for blog outfits and also for a fun chocolate post with Kathleen of Beauty Now App and Katie of Mirth Caftans – they’re all so nice and inspiring // Elly at Uptown Park // Destiny and Sid in downtown Houston // Lilly at an On Point Custom Homes pool
  • Seeing the McMullen twin girls for more swaddle photos for By George Baby Boutique!
  • Visiting Courtney and her girls at their house in Montgomery and meeting her husband, Matthew!
  • On a sad note, our sweet life-saver, Karina, left to go back to Mexico to visit family and friends! We are going to miss her! Isla starts school in just a few weeks though – I cannot believe it! I think she’s going to love Mother’s Day Out!!

Hope you are having the best week so far! xo

Healthy, Raw Vegan Oreos

My sweet friend, Mara, bought me an incredible raw, vegan cookbook for Christmas, and I have been cursing her every week for it (only kidding!), as I cannot stop myself from making these delicious desserts. In all seriousness, this book has saved poor Sasha from enduring the millions of healthy baking recipes that I tried to invent in my head for years – apparently there’s actually a science to these things and the recipes cannot just be winged like cooking!

I’ve been making most of the recipes following the exact instructions in the book, but yesterday I decided to go a little rogue on Emily’s ‘Raw Chocolate Cookies Sandwiching Vanilla Cashew Cream’ recipe and I’m so glad I did, as the result was phenomenal. I’ll call it the healthy, gluten free, refined sugar free, raw vegan Oreo (catchy little name, right?), or perhaps just vegan Oreo for short.vegan oreo healthy no baking raw oats dates cashews

I’ve got to warn you, these will make about 6 cookies, but they won’t last more than 6 minutes (especially if you’ve got guests over)! These are definitely my new ‘go to’ items, although I won’t stop making my other healthy vegan favorites (Black Bean Brownies, Brownie Bites, Mini-Cheesecakes and Chocolate Beet Brownies).

Cookie Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup of oats (gluten free if baking for someone with Celiacs or gluten intolerance)
  • 2 1/2 cups of pitted dates (I use these which you’ll find next to the raisins and other dried fruit at the grocery store)
  • 2 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons of melted organic coconut oil

Creative Baby Shower Invitations

I’m always scouring the internet for creative stationery – whether it be for a relevant life event or not. A baby shower invitation can inspire a birth announcement. A wedding save-the-date can easily become a Christmas card. A first birthday invitation You get the drill.

So although I’m not throwing any baby showers in the near future, I have been collecting some of my favorite designs recently and want to share them. I’ve posted two other favorites in the past: Geometric baby shower invitations by Lauren Chism found here and baby boy bowtie invitation by Atheneum Creative here.

I absolutely love all seven of these designs. They’re all very unique and range from brewery to literary tea party themes. I might be lying if I didn’t say the prince and gold polka dots weren’t my two favorites. Which do you like the most? Have you seen other cute ones? If so, please share the link in the comments below!

How to Plan The Most Amazing Vacation Ever

If you’ve been following along for awhile now or if you know me personally, you already understand that I’m pretty Type A. When we plan a vacation, this personality type becomes extremely apparent. Thankfully, this works for Sasha, and some people like to wander lackadaisically around new cities with no itinerary – I honestly cannot wrap my head around that, as I land with a printed agenda and have plans down to the minute as to what we’ll do and see. The most important thing for me (and others like me) to remember is that if something goes awry, just let it be. If we have ten things planned, but end up spending lots of time at one museum, it’s okay to let the other things not happen. But I do need plans just in case!

When we went to Turkey, Athens and Paris, I printed a book out that had our flight confirmations, passport info, and day-by-day itinerary. I’ve wiped out personal information, but you can get a good idea of the plans we had by reading it here. I created a very similar document/folder when we went to Bali last year for our honeymoon (see the custom map here). I think it’s very important to be well-prepared before you travel to a new city in order to absorb as much culture, sightseeing and delicious food as possible.

We’re currently planning our trip to Paris and St. Petersburg in May. I spent almost four months living in Paris in 2009 and have been back twice since then, so planning that portion requires much less research. St. Petersburg is an exciting challenge, as we’ve both never been, don’t speak any Russian, and don’t have any friends who have visited before. Fortunately, my best friend’s boss is from St. Petersburg, so I’m going to ask her for advice once I’ve done more research, as well as use Tripply (more on that below).

1pickdestinationPicking your destination(s) is the most important step early on in the travel discussion. Perhaps you’ve got a bucket list of places that you’re dying to see (like me!), or maybe you’re open to any country. If you fall into the latter group, then it’s best to do some researching. Are you looking for a cultural experience? Or a relaxing beach getaway? Once you know what kind of vacation you’re interested in and have decided on a budget, I recommend scouring the following sites for city inspiration.

  • Entouriste: This travel photography site features jaw-dropping pictures from cities all around the world (all of the photos on this post are from Entouriste except the header and second photo!).
  • Atlas Obscura: This travel blog has an inspiring section called Places, which highlights cities and sites from all around the world and includes a bit of background and some photographs.
  • Conde Nast Traveller: I am obsessed with this site. You can browse destinations or get inspired by ‘Types of Trips’ – whatever you’re looking for, you’ll find on this site (to be referenced later on in the process too). Their travel guides are phenomenal too.
  • Trip Advisor: I am a huge Trip Advisor nerd. Like huge. I swear that you can plan the most incredible vacation by reading other people’s reviews. When you’re trying to pick a city or cities, I highly recommend looking at their Top Destinations in the World listings.

Watercolor Calligraphy

One of my favorite new trends in the world of typography (a world I care all too much for), is watercolor calligraphy. I follow Lauren of @AFabulousFete on Instagram, and her prints are my absolute favorite. I love how the colors change over the course of the stroke from light to dark, which is beautifully matched with the varying thickness of the letters. There is a lot of gorgeous inspiration on the internet, and I’ve been motivated to give it a try as well!

Lauren posted the tools needed here on her blog, and I’ve ordered the brushes and plan on giving it a try. I am nerdily excited. Have you been noticing this trend too? Have you tried it?

Here are some of my favorite pieces of inspiration by various calligraphers. All photos are linked to their source site.

Happy Tuesday and Serbian Christmas Eve! We are heading to church tonight to celebrate for the second time. Having a multicultural family has its perks!
